Back to School & Safety Day

As the end of summer vacation approaches and students return to schools, Amys Martial Arts and the Voice of Polynesia are offering the community a spectacular event where there will not only be fun and entertainment, but also completely free classes and courses. This activity is set to take place next Saturday, the 23rd between 10:30am and 2:30 pm in its ample location in 104 South State Street in Orem. This event is directed at children, teens, and adults. Children ages 3 and up can participate in the interactive classes of Safety and Prevention. These will allow kids, now that they are starting classes in school, to know how to act in circumstances such as when approached by a stranger, or how to deal with bullies. In addition to these safety classes for kids, the organizers are also offering free karate, taekwondo, tumbling, cheerleading, Hawaiian dance, Polynesian dance, hip hop, break dancing, and yoga classes. This event will also be accompanied with a musical group and a presentation of performers, such as dance groups and Martial Arts Demonstration Teams.

Black Belt Essays

Last Testing we had one of our very own students become a Black Belt Recommended. David Pina (2008 Demo Team Captain) has just received a great honor. He has been working hard and is now approaching his goal.... to become a Black Belt. Not only is he very well prepared physically, but he had to complete a very difficult task for this testing. He had to write an essay about why he wanted to become a black belt. This is the first part of his essay, which he will add to and complete until he reaches his black belt.

AMYS Demo Team Bountiful Performance
Wow! First, congratulations to the AMYS Demo Team! They did a spectacular job up on that stage last Tuesday! Everyone put all their last bit of effort they had in them during that performance. It was a long day for these kids, with practices and training, by them time they got to the performance they were exhausted. However, that could not stop these kids. When they saw the crowd, they automatically shot up as adrenaline raced through their bodies. Great job AMYS ADENALINE! Many compliments were given for spirit, enthusiasm, technique, creativity, and performance. Second, thanks to all the parents who came out to support their kids. Also, thanks to all the AMYS families who came to watch. That auditorium was filled with AMYS Spirit. Lastly, I think everyone was pleased with watching the amazing Korean Demonstration Team. AMYS Adrenaline has a long way to go to catch up to them, but everyone already agrees, we're well on our way.
If you missed the performance, watch for the video to come soon!

AMYS Demo Team Showcase
As we all witnessed at the demonstrations this past year, the Amys Demo Team has performed spectacularly all around the state. At first it was really difficult to start, but when everyone was working they accomplished what they had been trying to get to. We have enjoyed working with the team, and we would like to congratulate their efforts, for many it was the first time to use their teamwork skills learning taekwondo. However, we also look forward to a great year and team in 2008. With this, we are proud to be hosting the 2008 AMYS Demo Team Tryouts in May 2008. If you are interested in participating, please pick up an information packet, or view it online.

Happy Thanksgiving!
We would like to take this chance to wish everyone a Happy thanksgiving! For all who came to Graduation and to the thanksgiving party, we had an amazing time watching all of you get your new color belts. We also hope you remember that with the higher the belt, the more responsibility you have. As you changed your belts you all did one very important thing. You hugged your parent. Please always remember to say 'thankyou' to your parents because they are the ones who bring you to taekwondo. They are some of the most important people you should be remembering throughout this thanksgiving holiday.

2007 Junior Olympics Results

On July 12th-15th, 2 members if our taekwondo family competed for the Gold Medal in the 2007 Junior Olympics. Dana Videla competed in forms and sparring. She did exceptionally well in forms, and became a semifinalist in her sparring division. Winning her first match with a seven point difference, she went on to her final match. Although she did not become a national champion, she achieved her goal of earning a medal in this national tournament. She came home on July 15th, showing her home state Utah her proud Silver medal she won.
Alberto Bonilla also participated in this tournament. He competed only in sparring, and succeeded in ruling that divisio, even though he unluckily started off with a disadvantage due to the uneven number of competitors of his division, which meant he had one more fight than any other competitor in his division. Although he had this slight inconvenience, Alberto paid no attention to it. He had his mind set on his Gold medal. Through what taekwondo has showed him about focusing and determination, he kept himself focused on his goal. After winning his first fight, by score of 8-1, he went on to being a quarterfinalist, and then won that match by 6-3. By this time, Alberto was very nervous. Again he fought, and won by score of 8-3. Now came his final match. Both he and his opponent were tired, as they had just fought all their way up to the top. This was the fight who would determine which competitor wanted that first place title more, which athlete was more determined. In this case, it was Alberto. He forgot all thoughts of exhaustion and used every last drop of energy he had in him. This year Alberto has come home with a Gold Medal. This goes to show what hard work and determination call help you achieve.
